Quotable Quotes from Wuthering Heights

wuthering-heights2Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte’s only book and is considered a classic in English Literature. Central to the story is the love of Heathcliff and Cathy, and the destructive effect of jealousy and vengefulness on people and their families and communities.
Heathcliff was my favorite character in the book and when I first read the book I thought he was a typical romance novel hero. Like them, he appeared dangerous, brooding and cold, but he would emerge devoted and loving and with a heart of gold. Needless to say I was disappointed. I thought Heathcliff was different from what was being projected about him – that his cruelty is merely an expression of his frustrated love for Catherine, or that his sinister behaviors serve to conceal the heart of a romantic hero. Yet, Heathcliff never becomes the reformed rake. He takes his revenge on the characters and as he admits himself, his abuse of Isabella was purely sadistic – he wanted to see how much abuse she could take and still come back for more.
I think I was like Isabella too – I loved Heathcliff inspire of everything he ever did!
